Due Diligence Workshop

Effective due diligence is one of the most critical steps in successful angel investing. This half day drill-down workshop takes the angel investor through the key issues which will determine major risk factors and deal breakers. The workshop emphasizes what must be confirmed, the cost of confirming, and the risk of not knowing. Workshop attendees learn what it takes to validate the plan and to define and contain the risk of investment.

Who Should Attend?
The target audience may include:

  • Investors who have completed the full-day PAI seminar programs or have made five to ten angel investments.
  • Service providers and other entrepreneurial support professionals who are interested in learning more about the specifics of angel investing to help prepare their clients for equity funding.

What is the Day's Agenda?
This workshop is designed to be highly interactive for an audience of up to 50 participants and deliverable in 3 ½ hours, including a 15-minute break. The format features a Review of the Due Diligence Checklist led by a panel comprised of experienced angels and service providers affiliated with the local angel group, followed by Q&A.

After a brief break, the same panel will develop a specific due diligence list for a case study company. Attendees will then participate in breakout sessions and develop due diligence checklists as a case study exercise. A representative from each breakout group presents their findings to the reassembled group and each is critiqued by the panel. The session closes with discussion and Q&A.

How is the Workshop Taught?
Workshops are taught in-person by a faculty of experienced angel investors and certified lead instructors provided by ARI.

Study Materials
A customized workbook will be provided to each participant with copies of all presentations, substantial resource materials, a standardized term sheet, a comprehensive glossary, bios on each faculty member and a profile of each sponsor. An attractive aspect of the workbook is its flexibility. For example, portions of the content can be tailored specific to the investment environment in the host community or region.

Workshop License
The host will enter into a licensing agreement with ARI (acting for the Kauffman Foundation). The license fee includes the provision of significant support for marketing and implementation. Optional national experts from a certified list can be retained by local host organization to serve as lead instructors, with the host organization to negotiate with the outside expert on costs for their time and travel.
